THE STORY OF SMITH LAKE
A Lake with a Story
Lewis Smith Lake was created by Alabama Power through construction of Lewis Smith Dam on the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River. Alabama Power applied for federal authorization during the 1950s, construction began in November 1957, and the dam and lake project was formally dedicated in May 1961.
The dam was named for Lewis M. Smith, a former Alabama Power president who was closely involved in its planning. The earth-and-rock-filled dam is approximately 2,200 feet long and 300 feet high and remains one of the largest structures of its type in the eastern United States.
The project was developed to generate hydroelectric power, support downstream water and navigation needs, and create new recreational opportunities. Over time, the lake evolved into one of Alabama’s most recognized boating, fishing, residential, and vacation destinations.
